He becomes a rap poet, a filmmaker, a writer, and the youngest tenured professor in Morgan State University’s history. Buck was not my typical reading fodder: It’s the salty story, studded with rap lyrics, of a 14-year-old gone wild who liberates himself at an alternative school in Philadelphia. People offer suggestions all the time (they’re church ladies too), and I dutifully do the research, read the books and make the call. Asante, would make a good interview for the Little Patuxent Review. I was having tea with a fellow book evangelist and LPR’s on-line editor, Debby Kevin, when she mentioned Buck: A Memoir, and thought the author, M. They are still around, though maybe in more subtle form.īullies don’t just disappear when you graduate from high school. Of course, bullies don’t just disappear when you graduate from high school. So prevalent, in fact, that one could easily make a list of famous movie bullies: Biff Tannen ( Back to the Future), Johnny Lawrence ( The Karate Kid), Ace Merrill ( Stand by Me), Draco Malfoy ( Harry Potter), and so on. Indeed, bullies are part of the human experience. Most everyone grew up knowing a bully in their school someone who would intimidate, threaten, and domineer the other kids. The reason this movie (and this scene in particular) resonated with audiences is because people can relate. The beauty of this novel is that it contains many short stories that entertain the readers from the very first page to till the last word of the novel. I really wished that something happened between them. I loved all of the chemistry between Mina and Cameron. He was very mysterous and also rather awesome. The new character Cameron was probably my favorite part of the book. I find her best friend Serena to be a bit too dependent on Mina and also annoying at times. In her new town, she doesn't struggle with the clique like in the first book, which was one of the most relatable qualities. Mina is an interesting character, because she doesn't want to be a vampire. In this eagerly awaited sequel to the popular Sucks to Be Me, Kimberly Pauley addresses many of her fans’ most pressing questions (Will Serena become a vampire? What happened to Raven? What’s next for Mina and George?) with signature humor and breezy bloodsucking style. 5/27/2023 0 Comments Tracy andreen booksIt was light and fluffy with some serious and important undertones as well. This was such a fun, wintery rom-com which was perfect to enjoy delving into around the cold, cosy evenings. I have given this book four out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you to Penguin Random House and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review So, This is Christmas by Tracy Andreen. It’s about home and family and friends and finding her place, and along the way she also finds the best Christmas present of all: love. It’s up to Finley to make sure he gets the Christmas he was promised. And she certainly didn’t expect to find the boy she may or may not have tricked into believing that Christmas was an idyllic holiday paradise on her grandmother’s doorstep. But instead she returns to find that her best friend is dating her ex-boyfriend, her parents have separated, and her archnemesis got a job working at her grandmother’s inn. Christmas hasn’t changed much in her sixteen years. Book Description (via Goodreads): When Finley Brown returned to her hometown of Christmas, Oklahoma, from boarding school, she expected to find it just as she left it. 5/26/2023 0 Comments The prince's gambitLo of Christina Lauren and I messaged pretty much daily as I devoured the books, pouring over scenes as we traded expletives and quotes and OMGs. Before long, we decided to bring in some more friends to talk about Laurent and Damen too, and this informal but super fun interview pretty much wrote itself. Here’s who I called… Once I finished the books, I couldn’t stop talking about them and thankfully I had a group of willing friends to gush with, including some other incredible authors like the ones I’m featuring today. This is the ultimate enemies-to-lovers story emblazoned by vivid world building, unraveled by flawless pacing. It’s a high fantasy adventure, both sweeping and intimate, with two princes at its center- two rivals-who battle their intensifying feelings for each other while also battling cunning enemies to reclaim their thrones. As most of you know, I recently fell in love with the Captive Prince trilogy written by the amazing C.S. 5/26/2023 0 Comments Frosty by Harriet E. It was magical, to sit inside a tree with dim lanterns, sipping hot chocolate and talking about literature.Ģ. After she read it aloud in class, he came home and asked if we could read it again! It’s the story of an old man, retired from a career as a headstone-maker, who builds a little cabin against a massive redwood tree. I was introduced to this book by my son’s first-grade teacher. This has to be the first book on my list, because it holds such an important place in my reader’s heart. But having searched my files, I have to admit that I have not, in fact, written about all these wonderful books! So here it is, my rundown of kids’ books I have read (and a few I haven’t) that are set in or near the Monterey Bay area.ġ. It’s such a passion that I was sure I’d written about it before. Ever since my husband and I read The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet*, which is set in Pacific Grove, to our son, I’ve had a passion for snooping out books with local flavor. What’s interesting about these found documents is how much voyeurism it imposes on the reader. Agnes represents queer people who have been excluded from their families, and this desire for care and safety ends up leading her down a peculiar path. At first, Zoe begins as an innocent helping hand, but soon we learn of her more sinister motive. LaRocca carefully concocts the identities of each of them through how they present themselves via online messaging, and through beautifully pained prose, portrays the loneliness of Agnes, alongside the misunderstood pain of Zoe. Throughout the tale of Zoe and Agnes, LaRocca masterfully executes a tale of desperation and conveys how far people will go to feel secure. |
